The basics

What is a PIVX Masternode?

A Masternode is a permanently online PIVX full node that locks 10,000 PIVX as collateral. It does not create blocks — block production stays with staking. Instead it provides the services a plain wallet cannot: it holds one direct vote in the DAO and shares in the Masternode part of every block reward, currently 8,460 PIVX per day across all active nodes.

  • Collateral stays yours The 10,000 PIVX are locked, not spent. You can unlock them at any time by stopping the node — nothing is transferred to a third party.
  • Server holds only the key You run the node on a VPS, but the collateral sits in your control wallet. The server only needs the operator key.
  • Uptime is the job The node has to answer continuously. If it stays offline long enough, it drops out of the reward queue until you bring it back.
  • One vote per node Each Masternode carries one direct vote on DAO budget proposals. Staking alone gives you no vote.

Sharing, not minting: the daily Masternode pool is fixed by the block reward. The more Masternodes are active, the smaller each one's share — that is why node count and your return move in opposite directions.

How to run a Masternode?

  1. Lock the collateral

Acquire and lock 10,000 PIVX as collateral in your control wallet.

  2. Choose the server

Run your own VPS or use Masternode.space, with hosting from about $1.

  3. Configure the wallet

Create and configure the Masternode in the PIVX Core Wallet or with MyPIVXWallet.

  4. Start, monitor and earn

Activate it from your control wallet. Your Masternode now secures the network and earns rewards automatically.

Setting it up with MyPIVXWallet? Back up more than the seed — the Masternodes themselves do not come back.

MyPIVXWallet keeps everything in your browser: the wallet and every saved Masternode entry. Clear the browser data, switch browser or profile, or lose the device, and the Masternodes are gone with it — every entry with its IP and port, collateral transaction and output index, and the Masternode private key. That is site data on that machine, not something stored on the blockchain, so re-importing the seed does not bring them back.

Your coins are not gone: the seed phrase restores the wallet and the 10,000 PIVX collateral. The Masternode key, however, is not part of the seed and nobody can rebuild it for you. The server keeps running for a while, but you can no longer start, restart or monitor the node — to you the Masternode is lost and a new one would have to be set up with a new key. So write down before you lock the collateral: seed phrase, Masternode private key, IP and port, collateral txid and output index. Background in the MyPIVXWallet overview.

02 // Masternode scarcity

The protocol allows more. The economics allow far fewer.

Supply defines the absolute ceiling. Current staking yield, Masternode rewards, PIVX price and hosting costs define the much smaller economic capacity.

03 // Reward simulator

Expected reward per Masternode when N Masternodes exist

Masternodes--
Approx. return-- Annual return (APR) APR = ((8,460 / N) x 365 / 10,000) x 100 The daily masternode rewards are shared equally across all active Masternodes. Enter a value to see the current example.
Rewards / day-- Daily rewards Rewards / day = (1,410 x 6 PIVX) / N The network produces approximately 1,410 blocks per day with 6 PIVX for Masternodes per block. Enter a value to see the current example.
Days between payouts-- Payout cadence Days between payouts = N / 1,410 Masternodes are paid sequentially. More active nodes mean a longer average wait between payouts. Enter a value to see the current example.
